Atlantic Bridge & Engineering is the steel erector for the Newton-Weston Bridge Bundle, MassDOT's design-build replacement and rehabilitation of the bridges at the I-90 (Mass Pike) and I-95 (Route 128) interchange. Our ironworkers are setting the girders for the three Ramp G bridges, the prefabricated bridge units that carry I-90 over the MBTA and CSX railroad, and the four-span, roughly 1,020-foot plate-girder bridge that carries I-90 over I-95 and the Charles River. That mainline bridge goes up in three phases between late 2024 and 2027 while both interstates stay open.
Phase 1 alone is 45 field sections of 110-inch-deep girders, the longest 140 feet and the heaviest about 113,000 pounds: about 1,650 tons of steel set over live traffic. Alongside the erection, ABE furnishes and installs structural steel repairs at more than 40 locations on the bridges being rehabilitated, and furnishes the noise-wall posts, scuppers, bearing bolsters and embedded plates for the new structures. The work runs over I-95, over I-90, in the Charles River from an access trestle, and over the active MBTA Worcester Line and CSX tracks, with every pick planned around lane closures, rail windows and river permits.
